Wanlong sits high in the mountains of Chongli, the ski district north-west of Beijing that anchored China's Winter Olympic ambitions and now draws crowds of weekend skiers from the capital. Among the Chongli resorts, Wanlong has a reputation as the more serious skier's mountain: it opens higher and colder, holds natural snow better than its neighbours, and offers a greater share of steeper, more testing pistes alongside the usual groomed cruising. The base is a compact, modern development of hotels and services rather than a traditional village, and the atmosphere is lively at weekends and quieter midweek. The climate is dry and very cold in midwinter, so conditions rely on hard cold and snowmaking, with a dependable core season. It suits intermediates and advancing skiers looking for the best conditions in the Beijing orbit, and is easily combined with the other Chongli resorts nearby.

How to get there
Beijing (Capital PEK or Daxing PKX) is the gateway, not any airport in China's northeast; the resort lies in Hebei north-west of the capital, reached by road or by high-speed rail to the Chongli area in roughly a few hours.
The Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway serves the Chongli district, from which a short shuttle reaches the resort; driving from Beijing is also common.
Best time: December to February is the core season, coldest and most snow-sure, with Wanlong holding conditions well into the period.
