Central Scotland

Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and Loch Lomond

Scotland's populated waist, and where most trips start. Edinburgh stacks a castle, a medieval Old Town and a Georgian New Town into one skyline and hosts the world's largest arts festival every August. Glasgow, an hour west, has the music venues, the Mackintosh buildings and the best shopping in Britain outside London. Stirling guards the historic route north, and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs starts the Highlands.

Best time: May–Sep; Aug for the festivals (book far ahead)
